D13 wooden HOUSE
Cracow, PolandThe building was constructed in the very center of Krakow, 3 km from the Old Town, using prefabricated elements made of kiln-dried wood, mineral wool, and fiber-cement structural panels. The prefabricated elements were manufactured in a production hall located 89 km from the project site. The contractor holds timber harvesting certificates in compliance with the principles of forest sustainability, sustainable development, and nature conservation. After assembly, the building’s exterior walls were additionally covered with a layer of stone wool insulation. The exterior finish was charred wood, which offers enhanced protection against UV radiation, moisture, and pests, and, more importantly, requires no chemical maintenance.
The building’s heating system was designed around an air pump, combined with a system of photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof. The building also features mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation combined with heat recovery. The project’s location and the provisions of the local zoning plan significantly influenced the selection of low-emission systems. The plot size prevents the use of a ground heat exchanger, and geological surveys did not allow for the installation of vertical heat exchangers. The power and number of photovoltaic panels were matched to the roof area, which was limited by the maximum building area.
With the design of this house in Krakow, we sought to address stereotypes and beliefs that single-family housing based on wooden construction technologies is only suitable for suburban areas and is associated primarily with summer homes. The architectural goal was not only to focus on ecological and energy-efficient solutions, but also to package this in an attractive, contemporary form. A wooden house doesn’t have to be associated with gable roofs and traditional windows; it can have a flat roof and large corner glazing, creating a building fit for the 21st century.
